647 - Corbett Redford

Every movement has somewhere sacred renowned as its birthplace and for East Bay Punk, that is undeniably 924 Gilman. For years this club has been the epicenter of a community formed by outsiders, freethinkers, and cultural revolutionaries armed with nothing more than determination and a few power chords. Corbett Redford spent the last four years of his life pouring over footage chronicling Green Day, Rancid, NOFX, and countless others to create his documentary, Turn It Around: The Story Of East Bay Punk. Who better could properly encapsulate all these vastly unique personalities sharing one common thread than someone who lived through all that triumph and turmoil themselves? Corbett applied what he learned from a fiercely independent scene to plunge headfirst into crafting a story that uplifts the powerfully honest principles behind punk rock and highlights how voices both big and small play a crucial role in shaping communities that matter. This interview weaves between Corbett's own involvement in the scene, how he came to make this beautiful film about it, and what is next on the horizon for him.

TEAM TURN IT AROUND

If you love documentaries and you love hearing from the people responsible for them then your next step is Hans Fjellestad on AID 425. He compiled together a film about the Sunset Strip in all it's hair metal glory.

From seemingly out of nowhere the DC scene exploded and Minor Threat was at the heart of it all. With a strong DIY ethic that was the through line of these musicians' careers, Start Today looks at Minor Threat.

Shane Valentino was a vital part in telling the story of Nocturnal Animals. As a Production Designer he lit scenes and set tones that would visually cast emotion across the actor's work. Hear more from the other side of the lens on AID 487.
